A hive of activity at local bee show

Local beekeepers showcased their products and educated the public on the importance of supporting local honey producers.

The Eastern Highveld Beekeepers Association (EHBA)’s efforts to educate the public about bees are yielding sweet results.

EHBA’s chairperson Pete Beart said it was evident at the association’s Bee and Honey Show on July 27 and 28 at Heckers Garden Centre, North Rand Road.

They held the show to generate more support for locally sourced raw honey and to create greater awareness among residents about the welfare of bees.

Community members could taste different types of honey and honey products from local beekeepers.

Elna van Rensburg and Linden Green.

Beart described the event as a success, adding they were happy with the support they received.

“The Honey and Bee Show is becoming more successful. People are returning to support the initiative and buy honey from local beekeepers instead of supermarkets.
“It was also interesting to see a lot of children at the event,” said Beart.

Tino and Elsa Jabellone from Benoni said they came to see what the beekeepers had to offer because they want to live healthier.

“The initiative caught our attention because we are drinking hot water with honey and lemon,” said Elsa.

Elsa added what stands out for her about the event, is the association is trying to save bees.

Beart said they are looking forward to their next show in November.
