Hospital raises awareness about burns and fire safety

Parents are encouraged to supervise children near fires and ensure they keep kettles and pots away from them.

With winter in full swing and with a higher risk of fires and burns as a result of heating devices, Tambo Memorial Hospital would like to make it known to the public that while they don’t have a burns unit, they are fully equipped to treat burn victims.

Their social work department recently hosted a campaign at an informal settlement in Boksburg to raise awareness about burns.

Hospital spokesperson Zoliswa Nzeku stressed the importance of prevention rather than treatment given the potential of a lengthy recovery time of up to two years and the risk of lifelong complications.

“Immediate action, such as using cold water to cool the burn should be undertaken.

“The hospital pleads with the community not to use substances such as ice, toothpaste, soap or oil for cleaning wounds.

“Seek prompt medical attention,” said Nzeku.

“Parents are encouraged to supervise children near fires and ensure they keep kettles and pots away from them.

“Also, store lighters safely and before bathing your children, check the water temperature by dipping in your hand or elbow.”
