The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) voiced worries over an increasing number of learners taking their own lives in a statement released on May 6.
This comes after four learners from Ivory Park’s Eqinisweni Secondary School passed away.
“The department is committed to continuing with partnership and conducting learner mental health roadshows to affected schools,” stated Matome Chiloane, the MEC for education in Gauteng.
Learners are advised to get in touch with support networks like Childline, which can be reached by dialing 116, or the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), which can be reached at 0800 456 789 or 0800 567 567.
