Witfield stalwart passes away

The McLennan family has been involved in the Witfield community since the early 1900s.

The Witfield community is mourning the death of Hugh George McLennan, who died on April 3.

Hugh, also known as Hughie, died of cardiac arrest at the age of 59.

He was born to Mary and Hugh George McLennan. He had an older brother, Donald, and their father served three terms as the Boksburg mayor.

After serving in the army and the SAPS, Hughie started his security company (HG Security) in the early ‘90s.

His daughter, Melissa McLennan, said her father was actively involved in community initiatives and helped where possible.

“He had a love for people and would start a conversation with any person, those he knew and strangers,” said Melissa.

Hughie loved animals and the outdoors and enjoyed playing golf and fishing with Melissa.

“Many would be surprised to know he trained as a farrier by trade,” she added.

Melissa said Hughie was known for his vast knowledge, with topics ranging from gardening to international politics.

“Many people who knew him would wholeheartedly agree that he was a unique man,” said Melissa.

A service was held for Hughie at the Witfield Methodist Church on April 11.

He will be missed by his family, friends and fellow residents.

Boksburg Historical Association chairperson Tess Uren confirmed McLennan Street in Witfield is named after Hugh.

The McLennan family has been part of the East Rand, especially Witfield, since the early 1900s.
