Walter takes driver’s seat

Round Table offers an opportunity for men aged 18 to 40 to make a difference in the community.

Walter van Rooyen was recently inducted Round Table Boksburg 17’s new chairperson for a second time and is determined to grow membership.

The Impala Park resident takes over from Cuan Maizey, who was obliged to hand over the position after two years.

He is now the treasurer of the Table and chairperson of Round Table Gauteng.

Van Rooyen became part of Round Table in 2017 and was also the chairperson in 2021 and 2022.

The senior software engineer said he is excited to oversee the Table again.

“We have gained a lot of new members since was I chairman the last time, and the club has grown a lot, meaning we can do many great projects to make an impactful change in the community,” he said.
Future projects he has in mind include a donkey derby and clean-up sessions in the community.

“I’m also excited about our annual Winter Knights project, where we collect blankets and non-perishable food to assist underprivileged people during winter.

“Residents are welcome to start donating even though the project only officially starts in April. We want to start helping those in need as soon as we can before winter sets in,” said Van Rooyen.
His vision is for the club to get new members.

“The more members we have, the more we can do for the community.”

Van Rooyen grew up in Boksburg and attended Parkdene Primary and Boksburg High schools.
The new chairperson described himself as an introvert who loves to socialise.

“I always had a caring nature to those next to me and those less fortunate than me. In a few instances, you could say I have given the shirt off my back to those in need. I literally gave my last bit of cash to someone who really needed it. This led to me being stuck at a tollgate with no card or cash. However, I would do it again.”

In particular, Round Table offers an opportunity for men aged 18 to 40 to make new friends from their community, area, country and the world. It is also an excellent vehicle for self-improvement in public speaking, leadership, project management, and meeting procedures.

The Boksburg Table meets every second Tuesday of the month at the clubhouse on 32 Lancaster Road.
