School gets colourful in support of those with rare diseases

Celebrating World Rare Disease Day, local learners coloured the playground in support of their friends.

Unique, courageous, intelligent and caring.

These are some of the words used to describe nine learners of Mickey Mouse pre-primary and Mindpro Academy, Atlasville, who are living with rare diseases.

On February 29, the world united to celebrate those who have been diagnosed with various forms of rare medical conditions.

Tots to teens of Mickey Mouse pre-primary and Mindpro Academy, Atlasville dressed in bright colours in celebration of fellow learners living with rare diseases.

The day is annually celebrated on the 28th, but every four years it is moved on to leap day, signifying the importance of comprehensive medical diagnostic analysis, in correctly diagnosing rare diseases timeously.

Looking within, the school decided to celebrate learners within its own premises who face medical challenges daily.

“It is a privilege to be able to offer a conducive learning environment not only for fit and healthy pupils but to create a safe environment for easily compromised learners too,” said Madelein Venter, principal and mom to a daughter living with ectodermal dysplasia.

“I believe in providing a safe space for these wonderful individuals thus giving them the opportunity to enjoy a happy and balanced childhood along with their peers, who subsequently learn valuable lessons in empathy and acceptance.”
