Eighteen years of love for best ex SPCA dog

Zoro is now an old man, but is still treasured.

Zoro, a Toy Pom-cross male who was crowned the winner of the Best Ex-SPCA Dog competition in 2008, has been living his best life with the Price family for the past 18 years.

Mico Price, who lived in Sunward Park at the time, explained her boyfriend Lloyd (now husband) adopted Zoro from the Boksburg SPCA for her as a gift in December 2006 to celebrate her matric results.

“We went into the puppy enclosure and he was being bullied by the other puppies. He jumped onto my lap so sweet and lovingly, looked at me with his sweet little face and big ears and we knew he was the one,” said Mico.

Since adopting Zoro, the family have never looked a day back.

“Zoro grew up being the most amazing and intelligent dog with tennis ball skills like no other. He has been on countless holidays with us, from long car drives to aeroplane flights to boat rides and fishing trips.

“Zoro has been a part of every aspect of our lives, as we went from boyfriend and girlfriend to husband and wife and then to mom and dad of Lilly and Emma,” said Mico, who now lives in Rynfield.

Mico is a dietician with a practice in Sunward Park and her husband is a project planner.

Mico kept every entry photo that was sent in to the Boksburg SPCA’s competition that was run in the Boksburg Advertiser

The competition was initiated by the SPCA as a fundraiser for the society, as the Boksburg Advertiser previously reported. Entrants had to pay an entry fee and the Boksburg public could vote by SMS for their favourites. A percentage of all the SMSs received also went towards the society.

Numerous entries were received and six finalists were selected. The public voted 454 times and Zoro was crowned the winner.

Thinking back, Mico said: “We were thrilled that he won the competition and are so glad we could show others the amazing SPCA dogs.”

The Boksburg Advertiser ran the Boksburg SPCA’s Best Ex-SPCA Dog competition.

The dog mom said they always encourage others to adopt animals.

“The SPCA play such an important role for animals. It’s so easy to support them and you get the most wonderful pets from them,” Mico pointed out.
Mico said Zoro is an old man now but still so loved and treasured.

The family has another dog, Bella, a dachshund who is Zoro’s eyes and ears as he is now deaf and doesn’t see well due to his age.
“We are so glad that all those years ago we decided to adopt Zoro.”

Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore said it’s wonderful to see that Zoro has lived a good life.

“The SPCA is so proud of the owners for taking such good care of Zoro,” she said.
