Stassen a valuable player for the Stormers

Stassen started his professional career at the Bulls and was a Junior Springbok in 2017.

“A person never knows what the future holds. Always keep your eye on the goal. Faith and a good work ethic is always a recipe for success.”

These are the words of advice from star Stormers rugby player and former Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen learner Hendré Stassen.

The 26-year-old, who can slot in at lock and flank, recently joined the Stormers after serving a four-year ban for elevated testosterone levels while he was in France playing under former Bok coach Heyneke Meyer at Stade Francais in 2019.

Boksburg Advertiser previously reported Stassen’s B sample also tested positive for a banned substance, which led to the termination of his contract with the French club.

Despite the finding, Stassen maintains his innocence.

He played club rugby last year with St George’s RFC in Strand before impressing on trial to gain a contract with the Stormers.

The utility forward proved that he adds value to the team when he scored his first try for the Stormers coming off the bench on January 20.

“I enjoy playing for the Stormers and I’m starting to find my feet. My teammates and everyone have welcomed me with open arms. We get along well.

“It took a lot of hard work to get to where I am now,” Stassen said.

Stassen, who is inspired by players such as Schalk Burger and Pieter-Steph du Toit, added that he would like to keep on playing in South Africa.

“I would love to put the green and gold jersey over my head in the future.”

Furthermore, he highlighted that he loved his high school years at EG Jansen.
“This is where the foundation of my rugby career was built,” he added.

Stassen started his professional career at the Bulls and was a Junior Springbok in 2017.

What he misses most about Boksburg is its people.
When asked what most people don’t know about him, Stassen responded: “I have a soft heart. Off the field, I always want to show that I care.”
