WATCH: Motorbiker airlifted to hospital following N12 accident

One person suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital, according to authorities.

Traffic was heavily backed up on the N12 westbound between Snake Road and the Jet Park offramp in the morning (January 31) due to an accident involving a motorcycle and a light motor vehicle near the Rondebult Road interchange in Boksburg.

A biker was seriously injured in the crash on the N12.

The crash resulted in the highway being completely closed, which brought traffic to a complete standstill, according to one motorist.

While the information that the City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services had about the scene was sketchy at the time of compiling this report, DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi confirmed that the accident happened at about 07:15 and involved a motorbike and a light motor vehicle.

A crash between a motor vehicle and a motorcycle caused a traffic mess on the N12 between Benoni and Boksburg.

“Our fire services were not on site but ER24 was on the scene. The biker was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries,” he said.
“Following the crash, authorities were forced to block all the lanes so that the helicopter could land on the freeway to attend to the injured victim.”

One motorist, who described the stretch of the freeway as a parking lot, said: “The freeway is at a standstill and we have been sitting in traffic for an hour from Snake Road to Atlas Road.”

Motorists reported seeing some taxi passengers opting to ditch their ride and walk to work, while others took the opportunity to get out of their cars, chat to other drivers and stretch their legs.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and to use alternative routes.
Just before 10:00, EMPD arrived to direct traffic into the far left-hand lanes and traffic eventually started clearing.
