Excitement as Grade Ones take their seats

The Boksburg Advertiser went on its annual excursion to capture the moment of Grade Ones starting their school journey.

There were almost no tears as Grade One learners started their school journey yesterday, January 17, along with thousands of children across the country.

The Boksburg Advertiser visited a few primary schools to capture the excitement of the first day of ‘big school’

Laerskool Witfield Primary
The school welcomed 161 Grade Ones this year.

Apart from little Michael Basson missing his parents, learners were happy to start the academic year.

Michael’s tears about “mamma” and “pappa” quickly dried up when asked what he wants to be when he grows up.

“I want to become a police officer,” he said.
Another Grade One learner, Domique Bezuidenhout, has dreams of becoming a princess.

It was also a bittersweet moment for parents who dropped their children off at the school.

Priscilla Zwane said she is nervous but excited for her daughter to start Grade One.

Laerskool Goudrand Primary
A total of 160 new Grade Ones walked through the gates.

Principal Gert Bote explained they had to turn away a lot of learners due to space.

“We simply do not have enough classes at our school to accommodate them all,” said Botes.

Nova Pioneer
Nova Pioneer’s Boksburg Campus welcomed 42 Grade Ones this year.

With no tears in sight, the learners seemed happy and excited to take on the academic year.

“We are happy to announce that everything went smoothly on the first day of school,” said Katy Dlamini, principal.
