Boksburg North officers trial to commence in April

The officers were granted bail of R5 000 each on February 10 and are all back at work.

The four Boksburg North police officers accused of assaulting and torturing a Nigerian man into a coma on January 9, last year, are expected back in the dock at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on April 4 for trial.

Constables Sakhile Mathaba, Mlondolozi Khalipha and Nkateko Hlogwane and Sergeant Sibusiso Shabangu face charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and defeating the end of justice.
They were granted bail of R5 000 each on February 10.

The officers were arrested at work on February 1 by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping further confirmed Shabangu will also be on trial on February 8 for a culpable homicide case against him.

Shuping did not elaborate on the matter of culpable homicide. However, the charge sheet indicates the charge emanates from an incident where Shabangu shot and killed Ikechukwu Callixtus Odoh on 9th Avenue on December 29, 2017.
