Families from Plantation enjoyed a Family Cheer Day on Battery Street on December 24, which marks the one-year anniversary of the gas tanker explosion that cost over 40 lives.
Deidre Paterson, one of the organisers, explained the aim of the event was to replace the dark memories of Christmas Eve with happy ones.
The event kicked off with a memorial service.
Rain started to pour during the event, but it did not stop the organisers from completing their mission of creating a fun environment for families.
Over 250 people enjoyed delicious food, including hot dogs, cup cakes and cold drink.
Furthermore, musician Jan Snyman, also known as Big J, entertained the attendees.
Another highlight of the event was when Santa paid a visit. Children enjoyed taking a photo with the man in red with the white beard.
The event was supported by SPAR Sunward Park,Ward 34 Clr Edith Klassen, Urban Ruins and The Benoni Ladies Forum.
Paterson expressed her gratitude to the Boksburg community and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.
