Beauty and the beast of unemployment

The project empowers unemployed women to work in the beauty industry.

American businesswoman Bracha Schoonerva has sponsored Project Bracha – A Blessing to empower 20 local unemployed Indian, coloured and black women to enter the lucrative hair and beauty industry.

Shaun Unterslak from The Unemployed Need Transformation (UNT), an accredited training provider and a registered NPO, will implement the project.

UNT empowers unskilled, unemployed residents of informal settlements and inner cities to enter high-growth and profitable industries.

The learners learnt to do freehand hair, braiding, hair extensions and how to apply artificial nails and eyelashes.

This comprehensive skill set will allow them to find employment or operate their own salons.

Recently, a promotion was held at Syrox Hair Salon on Commissioner Street to promote their skills to salon owners.

Timmonique Willemse performed a freehand hairstyle on salon employee Eugene Mahlalela under the watchful eye of owner Sylvia Nabukenya.

Unterslak said he hoped salon owners would avail themselves to help these women by offering employment to them.

In addition, any local company willing to do an in-house promotion for the employees can contact Unterslak.

Expect special prices because this is a chance for the beneficiaries to market themselves and earn the proceeds from the promotion.
