Loving children is not work

Priscilla Wool and Marinda Katzke won’t retire anytime soon.

A long-serving employee of Boksburg Child Welfare, Marinda Katzke, and a veteran volunteer, Priscilla Wool, who are based at the Reiger Park branch, say their love for children has kept them in the organisation for so many years.

Marinda (53) has worked for the organisation for 21 years and Priscilla (61) has been with them for 15 years.

It was in 2002 that Marinda began working as an admin assistant for the child welfare.

“I typed letters, reports and all information for the social workers. Then, in 2011, I became a social auxiliary worker. I joined Boksburg Child Welfare to serve children and impart love to them.

“What I love about this organisation is that when you make a mistake, everyone jumps in to help you,” said Marinda.

She explained that her main duty in her position is to help social workers with home visits and admin work.

“Being in this position helps me to do more groundwork, and I enjoy it,” she said.

Marinda also runs child welfare’s Play Group with Priscilla.

“We both enjoy helping children. Play Group is an organised group providing care and socialisation to children aged four to six. Children acquire new skills and learn a lot in the group.

“Our main focus is children from disadvantaged families,” she said.

Priscilla started volunteering at child welfare in 2009 and has never looked back.

“I have remained a volunteer. I enjoy working in the organisation.

“I run the Play Group with Marinda. The respect I get from my colleagues has kept me working at the organisation for this long,” she explained.

For her, child welfare is a family.

“I thank all my colleagues for all their support. I’m thinking of retiring, but it won’t happen anytime soon because I believe there’s more to do,” Priscilla said.

The Play Group has appealed for food, carpeting, furniture, toys and books. Contact Boksburg Child Welfare’s Nompumelelo Gidela on 066 058 0289 if you can help.
