LETTER: We take no bull when it comes to our beautiful vlei

Boksburg Community Project movement began with a place dear to our hearts, the Atlas Vlei.

Helen Kruger, of NPO Boksburg Community Project, writes:

The heart-warming story of the Boksburg Community Project movement began with a place dear to our hearts, the Atlas Vlei.

As residents, we had been using the park, but its deteriorating condition left us feeling despondent.

The once-vibrant space was marred by long grass, overgrown paths, rusty children’s equipment, and scattered litter. It was clear that we needed to take action, and the Atlas Vlei was the first project we embarked upon, rallying our community together.

One month ago, I reached out to the City of Ekurhuleni, hoping they could help us by cutting the grass at the park.

Because of various challenges, Ekurhuleni could not assist us.

In our time of need, a true hero emerged in the form of Dr Clifford Bull from Craigview Vet.

He has always pledged his unwavering support to our cause. However, the challenge with the Atlas Vlei was its vast 5km radius of grass that needed to be cut. This is a task that a regular mower could not handle.

To our astonishment, Dr Bull, who owns a farm in Mpumalanga, offered to bring his tractor to aid the Atlasville community.

He made the trip to fetch the tractor on a Wednesday evening, returning to Atlasville at 01:00 on Thursday. He ensured we could begin our mission at 08:00 on November 2, with the tractor cutting the grass and our Boksburg Community Project staff cleaning paths and brush cutting.

Charles, a driver who accompanied Dr Bull from Mpumalanga, dedicated three days to cutting the grass. He even took the time to beautify the small park on Pheasant Road for us.

Not everyone will go above and beyond for their community, but Bull proved to be an exception. (letter shortened).
