Benoni plot gardens will be on show in November

The gardens will be open from 09:00 to 16:00 and tickets will be on sale at the properties on show.

Nestled on the outskirts of the bustling city lies Marister, an agricultural community with lush rolling lawns, seemingly untouched by urbanisation.

While some plots are home to small flocks of sheep others boast with fully sustainable veggie gardens as well as fruit orchards, and you have the opportunity to take a tour of these magnificent gardens this summer.

On November 4 and 5, city slickers are invited to visit the inaugural Benoni North Open Gardens tour, where seven agricultural holdings will be open to visitors.

The event is aimed at raising funds for HELM, a community driven movement which is instrumental in coordinating fire-fighting efforts, crime prevention patrols as well as attending to municipal service delivery emergencies such as burst water pipes, cable theft and power outages throughout the area.

Rendering their services on a voluntary basis, the 65 active members have for the past 15 years put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of their community.

Funds raised through the open gardens tour will be used to assist HELM in acquiring personal protective equipment, as well as upgrade their equipment so that they can be of better service to the community.

The gardens will be open from 09:00 to 16:00 and tickets will be on sale at the properties on show.

Gardening enthusiasts can also look forward to an informative talk by gardening guru, Panda, at Kazimingi Nursery at 10:00, on November 4, as he shares his tips and tricks for your summer garden.

Pop in at Annrin Nursery for advice about succulents and carnivorous plants and here the first 25 children under the age or 12 will receive a free mini succulent garden on either of the days.

Touring can become strenuous work, so kick back and relax at The Yard, which will host the event’s tea garden.

Sales of cake and tea will added to the HELM fund.

For more information or to catch a glimpse at some of the gardens that will be on show, follow the Benoni North Open Garden page on Facebook or log on to www.benoninorthopengardens.co.za

Tickets will also be available for purchase on the site and are valid for both days.

Raffle tickets will also be on sale to put you in line to win spectacular prizes
