SPCA gives rabies shots in support of World Rabies Day
World Rabies Day raises awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources.
In support of World Rabies Day, the Boksburg SPCA vaccinated over 41 animals on Sky Street on September 28.
The theme for this World Rabies Day was ‘All for one, one health for all’.
Rabies is a zoonotic disease, meaning it is a disease people can get from animals. The virus affects the brain and causes death. It is shed in saliva and spread by the bite of an infected animal. In SA, people are usually infected by dogs, but cats, mongooses, jackals and other wild animals can also infect humans.
Boksburg SPCA inspector Ralph Chivaviro explained their efforts to prevent an outbreak of rabies by vaccinating animals.
“We went to Sky Street because the community always come to us if they need help, so we decided to go to them,” said Chivaviro.
Chivaviro said rabies is a fatal and dangerous disease.
“It is vital to vaccinate your pets against rabies. If an animal bites you, you must seek medical help immediately.
“If anyone gets a pet, do your research. A rabies vaccination is also inexpensive.”
