About the CWL Boksburg Cancer Fund
The fund was established in 2007, although the CWL Boksburg branch has been advocating fundraising for cancer awareness for much longer.

According to CWL president Sophia Dooley, it came into being after some branch members and a few members of the community were struggling to access and pay for cancer treatment.

“It was then that the branch decided to form our cancer fund. Since then, we have hosted annual fundraisers, with notable support from well-known personalities, like Mani de Freitas, Mark Pilgrim (now sadly deceased), Edith Venter, Elna Macintosh and Mimi Jardim, to name a few,” she said.

Sophia explained that applications for financial assistance are submitted confidentially to the CWL executive with relevant supporting medical specialists’ letters.

Money raised goes towards purchasing equipment and other items needed by various NPOs, such as the St Francis Care Centre, and for oncology treatment, medication, specialist doctors’ fees and, in some cases, groceries for cancer patients.

While the CWL cannot assist with 100% financing, they assist where they can.

“Unfortunately, our membership numbers have dwindled over the years. We only have 10 active ladies at the moment. Apart from me, we have Jennifer de Sousa, Ailsa Johnson, Zita dos Passos, Marlene Rudman, Valerie Chetty, Maria Perreira, Margaret McCarron, Sandy du Plessis and Gail Garnie.

“We are always looking for more members as there are so many people to assist in our community,” Sophia said.

The CWL meets on the third Saturday of each month in the hall at St Dominic’s Catholic Church, Boksburg CBD.

For more information about their Cancer Fund or how to join the CWL, contact Sophia on 082 870 7434.

Professor Carol Benn is one of the guest speakers at the function on October 14.
