Update on massive power outage in Boksburg

Thousands of residents have been left without power for a week following the fire at a major substation on Atlas Road.

Municipal technicians are still working to restore power to Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge and parts of Bardene and Beyers Park after the Witkoppie substation fire on September 19 left large parts of Boksburg without power.

According to City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, multiple cable faults hampered efforts to restore power to these areas within the initially estimated time of September 25.

“After the incident on Tuesday, power was restored to the Witfield, Anderbolt and Yaldwyn substations later on the same day.
“Since then, the team continued in earnest to restore electricity to the outstanding areas of Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge and some parts of Bardene and Beyers Park.
“By last night, technicians could only manage to reconnect Atlas. Unfortunately, the team could not reconnect the rest of the areas after they discovered multiple cable faults on the network.

“The team is attending to the faults and the estimated time to get the job done is this evening. The exact restoration time will be communicated once all work has been completed,” explained Dlamini.
He advised residents to treat electrical networks as live at all times.
