Save lives by donating blood

Community members are urged to donate blood as the festive season is approaching.

Gert Beetge from Ravenswood has saved about 240 people by donating blood.

He donated his 80th unit of blood at the Ravenswood Shopping Centre on September 16.

It was a successful day for the SANBS at the centre as they collected 27 units while their target was 10.

While donating blood, the 51-year-old Beetge explained he started rolling up his sleeve to donate blood at the age of 16 to help other people.

“By donating blood you can make a difference and save many lives.”

Beetge was recently honoured by the SANBS for his commitment and dedication to blood donation.

As the festive season is fast approaching and the blood demand will increase, Beetge is encouraging community members to also do their part in donating blood.
“People should start donating blood at a young age if they can,” said Beetge.

Donors must meet the minimum criteria for donating blood, which are as follows:
• Weigh at least 50kg
• Be between the ages of 16 and 65
• Be in good health
• Leading a sexually safe lifestyle
• Consider your blood safe for transfusion

Once you have donated, you may only donate again after 56 days.
