Seven women’s teams battled it out on the Cardinals pitch – Vaal Dodgers Ladies, Valhalla Ladies, METs Ladies, Palm Ridge Ladies, Alexandra Ladies, Boksburg Cardinals Ladies and Giants Ladies.

The final match of the tournament was between Giants Ladies and Vaal Dodgers Ladies. Giants won the match.
Grobler said they hosted the event to promote ladies baseball, which is also growing at a fast pace.

“We want women out there to know that baseball is not just a sport for men, even women can also play the sport and take it as a career.

“This is our first Women’s Day baseball event. The ladies teams are playing in the winter season league currently. They are playing in the men’s baseball reserve league just to learn more about baseball,” explained Grobler.

She added that during the upcoming summer league, they are going to choose players that are going to make up the provincial ladies team.

In another Women’s Day event, the Boksburg North Sector One CPF hosted a Woman Empowerment Month market day in Bartlett.

The event consisted of business stalls, a blood donation spot, a women’s rugby section, a self-defence class along with an anti-hijack demonstration.

Various security companies joined the event.

Boksburg North Sector One CPF member Simone Watson said they hosted the event to bring the communities together.

Law enforcement personnel arrest a ‘suspect’ during the anti-hijack simulation.

“We had various activities at the event. There was an anti-hijack simulation that was done to show women what to do in a hijacking situation.

“Women were also offered a self-defence class. Twenty-one gallons of blood were collected at the blood donation section,” said Watson.

In Reiger Park, Rasheeda Chali, who holds the Women and Children portfolio in the City of Ekurhuleni council spoiled the elderly women with a lunch at the ST Vincent Anglican Church hall.

Chali said she saw it fit to celebrate the elderly women on Women’s Day.

“We have Margret Narasoo, who is 96 years old, and Grace Heynes, 90 years old, that was part of the lunch. We just wanted to show appreciation and do something special for the elderly,” said Chali.

Edith Klassen, the councillor of Ward 34, who attended the lunch, said she came to support the initiative because it’s held on a special day for women in general.

“It’s a good idea to celebrate the elderly because they are the ones we, as modern women, can learn a lot from. I would like to thank the event organiser and all the people who sponsored the event,” said Klassen.
