Suspected cable thieves released

Railway line cables continue to be targeted by cable-thieves.

Dawn Park police refrained from opening a case and detaining two suspected cable thieves that were nabbed by Ekurhuleni Thata-Zonke Anti-Crime Unit in Villa Liza on July 25.

This is according to the spokesperson of the unit, Simphiwe Khumalo.

He said his members nabbed the suspects while they were patrolling in Villa Liza. They spotted the suspects carrying copper railway cables.

“The suspects confessed that they got the cables at the railway track near Villa Liza. Our members handcuffed the suspects and took them to the Dawn Park police station.

“There was, however, no clear case to be opened for the theft. The suspects found the cables from the old railway track, which is not in use and scrap collectors also collect whatever is valuable to them,” expressed Khumalo.

The Boksburg Advertiser has sent an enquiry to the Dawn Park police and is waiting for a response.
