Rynfield artist positive about career in Hollywood

"I’m waiting for feedback to see how my music was received and where it is going to be placed."

Multi-talented Benoni performing artist Mitchell Godwin seems to have found his niche in Hollywood and is determined to establish a successful career in the USA.

Godwin, from Ebotse, received a call-back after winning the International Presentation of Performers (iPOP) challenge last year and recently spent time in Los Angeles with producers and managers from Hollywood Productions.

“After the convention, I got a call-back from producers who wanted to get to know me more and to see if they could work with me,” he said.

After attending red carpet events, networking and establishing contacts, he is more determined to use all that he learnt to forge a successful career in the entertainment capital city of the world.

“In the next five years, I would live in Los Angeles, would have released a chart-topping song and be touring the USA. My parents would have retired as well.”

The musician is awaiting feedback from Hollywood Productions and is hopeful this will open doors for him.

“They want to get my music in movies. I am waiting for feedback to see how they received my music and where it will be placed. This will niche-down on the music I should be creating.”

The 25-year-old realised his aptitude for music early because of his echoic memory. He started playing piano before his fourth birthday and now plays around 20 instruments.

As a vocalist and instrumentalist, he said various artists have influenced the different aspects of his music, citing Freddy Mercury, Lewis Capaldi and the South African multi-instrumentalist Reinhardt Buhr.

“Music is interesting to me. There is so much to it and that’s why it’s the thing I’m most passionate about. I can’t imagine a version of myself not doing this. It’s the one thing I identify as,” he said.

While the entertainment industry in Los Angeles was a breath of fresh air for Godwin because of its laid-back nature, he said his main lesson was how artists there have capitalised on the power and influence of social media, which they used to promote their music.

“It is a must for any artist,” he said. “If you are a serious artist, your primary focus should be the craft, and social media should follow that.”

Godwin also runs a public relations company. He urged artists to be business-minded and not focus on the craft alone, to open their horizon and have accessible money flow to pursue their music.

“If you cannot wrap your head around the business side of things, you are wasting your time.

“The reality is no matter who you work for, what you do and what happens, it is filling someone’s pockets. I realised I should do things that fill my own pockets.”

His advice to the youth is, “Stop worrying about how people look at you or worry yourself about things beyond your control. Do the possible. Focus on being you because your success lies in you.”
