Daveyton street mile is back

The event is back after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid19 pandemic.

Daveyton Hearts chairperson Dikeledi Nhlapo is urging the community to support the club when it hosts the Daveyton 10km Challenge and Street Mile at Sinaba Stadium on September 17.

The event is back after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic and administration issues, which led to the postponement of last year’s race.

Nhlapo said this event is a community initiative and, therefore, the club would appreciate any kind of support from the greater Benoni community.

“They must come out in their numbers to support us, especially those in the sporting community. Our philosophy is to promote a healthy lifestyle in our community. It will be encouraging to see community members of all ages participate in the event,” she said.

She expressed her excitement, adding that the profit made from the event will help the club achieve some its goals, including their preparations for next year’s Comrades Marathon.

“We are happy and ready for the event,” she said. “We are not sponsored as a club. The only way we make an income is through monthly membership fees. So this event is going to assist us with our youth development programmes and buying equipment for our needy runners.”

The event was first run in 2018 after the club realised Daveyton was one of the few Ekurhuleni communities without a road running event.

Nhlapo said the race was influenced by the Thembisa Mile, which, upon seeing its success, they decided to bring it Daveyton.

“We had challenges with the first event in 2018 and in 2019. We succeeded due to our community’s involvement and all the sponsors.

“We couldn’t host last year because we weren’t sure we would succeed due to our planning. We then decided to push it to this year,” Nhlapo said.

The event will consists of the 5km fun run or walk, 10km and 1 mile races. It will also include aerobic sessions for fitness enthusiasts.

Nhlapo thanked the Mpongo Cycling Club for volunteering to assist with marshalling during the event.

Comrades Marathon success

The chairperson said she was encouraged by how the club performed in the down-run in June.

“We performed well. I’m happy with the two silvers. We achieved two Bill Rowans, five Robert Mtshali and three bronze medals, as well as a single Vic Clapham,” she said.
