Market for Lilianton enclosure well supported

Over R10 000 was raised at the market.

The Lilianton Residents’ Enclosure Committee’s community market at the New Apostolic Church on May 27 was a huge success.

The initiative was a fundraiser for the proposed enclosure of the suburb. One of the organisers, Charlene Day, said she was happy with the support the market received, and confirmed they raised over R10 000.

The sources of income included stand fees, raffle tickets and an auction of luxury holiday packages, sports and African memorabilia and wines.

Some residents also made market day donations.

“We are one step closer to getting our area enclosed, so everyone can have a safe place to live. We’re looking forward to having market days in the future,” she said.

Ward 33 Clr Ashley Hoods also supported the event.

According to the committee, the process to turn the area into a gated community was initiated a few years ago but only received final approval from City Planning on March 8.

Day explained that they still need the following for the enclosure to become a reality:
• To sign the contract with the City of Ekurhuleni and present them with a 20% guarantee cheque for the total cost of the project

• The tender for contractors expired on May 23. They can now again advertise in the Government Gazette.

Thereafter, they can start the application for wayleaves and fencing can be erected once wayleaves are approved

The committee pointed out that the proposed enclosure of Lilianton is a security mechanism intended to do more than just deter criminals.

It intends to protect public infrastructure and prevent illegal land use.
