Visitors get a buzz at Bee and Honey Show

The mobile working observation hive was a big hit at the event.

The Eastern Highveld Beekeepers Association (EHBA) Bee and Honey Show on May 6 and 7 at Heckers Garden Centre, North Rand Road, created a buzz.

The show was held to not only generate more support for locally sourced raw honey, but to create greater awareness among residents about the welfare of bees.

Chairperson of EHBA, Pete Beart, said the association is overjoyed by the turnout at the show.

“We would like to thank the public for coming through to stock up with honey and other honey bee-related products, and also for the very keen interest in learning more about these marvels of nature,” said Beart.

He highlighted the mobile working observation hive proved to be a big hit, and a permanent observation hive is now installed at Heckers for a swarm of relocated bees.

Now members of the public can follow the progress of a real bee relocation story and monitor their recovery.

“We also hope to have a permanent display selling honey products here within weeks as well,” Beart said.

“A big thank you to Louis, Ronnie and the staff at Heckers for hosting the show and their genuine care for the bees and what EHBA is trying to achieve.

“This is to assist local bee keepers, large and small, and promote the use of real South African raw honey by introducing local consumers to local beekeepers. All to better the lot of our local honey bee.”

Furthermore, many of the members do talks for small groups and schools and bee keeping courses for those interested in gaining further knowledge.

“Once again, by popular demand, while we are not able to do weekly shows, we will be doing another in a few months’ time at Heckers,” Beart concluded.
