Family wants justice after man dies in car accident

The family feels the investigation is going nowhere.

The family of David Barend Lee Esterhuizen (30), who died in a motorbike accident on the corner of North Rand Road and Anchor Street on October 2, 2022, have expressed their disappointment in the police.

His cousin, Andrew Pieterse, explained that Esterhuizen was driving from Dingo’s Pub in Lakefield, Benoni.
While stationary at a traffic light, a silver Nissan Livina crashed into him at about 02:42.

Pieterse said the family is still trying to pick up the pieces after the incident and he’s been working hard to assist the police with the investigation.

“It’s been six months and still no one has been held accountable for David’s death. I have been assisting where I could speed up the investigation, but it seems that there is always an excuse from the SAPS for everything.

“The investigating officer has changed four times. Then they are on leave or the file is floating around because it has not been allocated to anyone or the accident scene photographer is on leave.

“When I call to follow up, they don’t answer. They never get back to you or when they do it’s two weeks later.

“It’s very frustrating how our justice system is a complete mess and there’s no pride or urgency in what they do anymore. We are disappointed and heartbroken that this is what we as citizens have to believe in or respect as people that are supposed to protect and serve.”

Pieterse described his cousin, a counter salesman from Kempton Park, as humble.

“He had a huge impact on people and was extremely involved in the community. He tried to assist the needy where possible and was always willing to help others. What a guy,” Pieterse said.

Estherhuizen is survived by his mother, sister, wife, family and friends.

The Boksburg Advertiser is still awaiting official comment from the police.
