Are you or a loved one battling with hard substance abuse? Encountering setbacks? Unable to fully commit to a recovery programme? Looking for more information on how to support a loved one battling the realities of hard substance abuse?

Substance abuse is characterised by drug or alcohol-seeking use that is compulsive, or difficult to control, despite its harmful consequences.

Many people don’t understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs or alcohol. They may think that those who use drugs or alcohol lack willpower and that they could stop it simply by choosing to. In reality, this is complex, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will.

This week on “Ask The Expert”, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is talking to Anel Sherren, clinical supervisor at Cedars Addiction Treatment Centre and Dr Hermant Nowbath, a psychiatrist, on “Exploring the Reality of Hard Substance Abuse”.
