Warning: Flooding possible – be on high alert

Emergency services responded to several calls for help at the weekend. These included a rescue operation in the Natalspruit River.

As heavy downpours continue to wreak havoc on parts of the country, the Ekurhuleni DEMS warns that the anticipated rainfall could bring a risk of flooding in areas prone to floods in the city.

The DEMS advises the public to exercise caution because the rainfall will likely continue.
The season has brought excessive and prolonged rainfall to nearly every corner of South Africa and its neighbouring countries.
The severe weather has led to the disruptive flooding of roads and some settlements in several provinces, resulting in rivers and dams overflowing, people’s property damaged, and public infrastructure washing away.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, since the downpours started last week, property has been damaged and families displaced in different parts of Ekurhuleni.

“A three-room house and a nearby shack collapsed after giant sinkholes opened up underneath the properties at the weekend in Winnie Mandela Ext Five, Thembisa. About 35 households near the sinkholes were evacuated.

“Our rescue teams were also dispatched to Zonki Zizwe after reports of people suspected to have drowned while trying to cross the Natalspruit River, which had burst its banks. The rescue operation was, however, called off on Sunday after the teams could not find the suspected drowned people,” explained Ntladi.

Hot spots
Ntladi pointed out that floods are likely in the low-lying areas under the railway bridges in several parts of the city, including Boksburg, Germiston, Brakpan and Springs.

He said other areas of concern include the overcrowded low-lying informal settlements, particularly those built on inhabitable areas or dolomitic sinkholes.

“We’ve had record rainfall to this point, and the ground is sodden and this affects its ability to absorb water from prolonged rain. Our catchment areas, dams and rivers are already full. Given the water-logged soil, flash floods and runoffs are likely across the city.”
Ready
Meanwhile, the DEMS teams are on high alert and ready for any incidents. However, residents are still urged to take special care.
People are advised not to drive through or walk across flooded roads. Parents must be vigilant and ensure their children do not play near dangerous water bodies or swim in dams and rivers.
In case of emergencies, call the city’s customer call centre number on 011 458 0911, call 10177, or dial the cellphone emergency number 112.
