Gas tanker explosion: Education Africa All Stars raises funds for victims

All the funds that were raised will go to the Hope SA Foundation.

The Education Africa All Stars Marimba Band raised R3 800 on February 4 at East Rand Mall for the families and victims of the gas tanker explosion.

According to senior manager and marimba specialist at Education Africa, Joan Lithgow, the band who performed on Saturday in this fundraising effort wanted to give back to society in the best way they know how by playing marimbas.

“Education Africa thanks the 120 people who generously donated to this cause as well as Wimpy and Mugg and Bean who provided the marimba players with refreshments. All the funds will go to the Hope SA Foundation which will be distributing the funds to the families and victims of this horrific explosion.

“Thank you to the management of East Rand Mall for facilitating this fundraiser.”

Lithgow explained Education Africa, established in 1992, pins its focus on providing poverty alleviation through education.

“Founded by humanitarian and social entrepreneur, James Urdang, with the gracious support of such historic political heroes as Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela, our programmes creatively focus on improving education quality and access by providing a multitude of educational and skills-building opportunities for disadvantaged South Africans.

“We aim to assist individuals in their quest to obtain a quality, relevant education and ensure that they become global citizens and competitive, productive elements in the local job market.

“Our work has directly benefited tens of thousands of South Africans over the past three decades, and indirectly impacted over one million more.”

She highlighted they support the nation’s most vulnerable citizens, from toddlers to adulthood, with an aim of impacting communities throughout all nine provinces of South Africa.

CEO of the Hope SA Foundation, Namritha Sivsanker, expressed her gratitude to Education Africa for its support.
