Protect your animals during a heatwave

It is important that your pets have access to water at all times.

The manager of the Boksburg SPCA, Vicky Finnemore, said that pet owners must take special care of their animals during a heatwave.

“Under no circumstances should people leave their pets in a parked vehicle in this heat,” said Finnemore.

“One does not realise how quickly the temperature inside a stationary car can rise. It can become more than 10° hotter than outside the vehicle.“

She highlighted that pet owners must ensure their animals have 24-hour access to water. This includes all domestic, farm and exotic animals, caged birds, rabbits and hamsters.

“Water must be placed in a shady area.
Furthermore, shelter is a necessity in this heat. The area must, however, not be small or confined without ventilation.

“Animals with lighter pigmentation can burn in the sun, and dogs with breathing problems, such as bulldogs, pugs and Pekingese, tend to overheat quickly and should be monitored.

“Owners can wet their dogs with cool water as well.”
