Tambo Memorial Hospital is mourning the death of 10 permanent and two nursing agency staff members who died in the gas tanker explosion. Below are the available photos and names of staff who lost their lives, as supplied by the hospital:
* Evelyn Bore Majatladi (55) was born in Limpopo and enrolled at Lungile Nursing College after school. She previously worked at Deansgate Retirement Home and Netcare Milpark. She was married with five children and nine grandchildren. She died on Christmas Eve.
* Moshemane Billyboy Mahoa (43) had only taken five days of sick leave in 12 years as an employee of Tambo Memorial, where he worked as a driver. He is survived by his fiancé, two sons, a daughter, and four siblings. He died on Christmas Eve.
* Nthabiseng Patricia Modisakeng (40) died on December 28.
* Kgothatso Magopane (41).
* Siphowokuhle Thandeka Mbatha (38) was placed at the hospital by a nursing agency and died on December 29.
* Thokozile Ellen Xaba (54) was also placed at the hospital by a nursing agency.
Matlakala Suzan Maxakaza (58) matriculated at Daveyton Secondary, then trained as an auxiliary nurse and completed further training at Ann Latsky Nursing College while working at Tambo Memorial. She is survived by her two children, four sisters, two brothers and a grandson. She died on December 26.
Audrey Nompumelelo Shezi (41) grew up in Nkandla. She matriculated in 2003 and graduated from Letjahabile Nursing School two years later. She had worked in the paediatric ward at Tambo Memorial since 2011. She is survived by her parents, two siblings, her daughter, and her fiancé.
Koena Margaret Sekoba (59) was born in Limpopo and completed her studies at Lebone Nursing College. She worked at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital before joining Tambo Memorial. She leaves behind her husband, three children, four grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers.
Lovey Khensani Thobela (43) was born in Mpumalanga and studied nursing at Tswelopele Nursing College, furthering her studies at Rhema Nursing College. Her career began in an old age home, then she moved to Horizon Clinic. She joined Tambo Memorial in 2019 and is survived by her husband, a son, a granddaughter, her mom, and five sisters. She was the sole breadwinner.
Matjatji Peggy Maila (38) was born in Limpopo. She initially worked as a domestic, but found her true calling at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where she worked as a midwife between 2012 and 2106 before joining Tambo Memorial. She is survived by her three children. She died on Christmas Day.
Winnie Sibongile Hobyane (40) was born on January 1 in Nwadzekudzeku Village and married in 2007. She obtained a certificate in computer skills and did a short course in beauty therapy before enrolling at Lungile Nursing College. Her permanent appointment to Tambo Memorial came in 2019. Sibongile is survived by her husband, three children, and four siblings. She died on Christmas Day.
