Remain on high alert as more rain is expected

More rain expected with warnings of possible flooding being issued

Due to persistent rainfall, the local Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains on high alert for possible flooding, drowning and other life-threatening emergencies following warnings of more disruptive rain and severe thunderstorms with possible damaging winds.

According to the South African Weather Services, hail and heavy downpours are further expected throughout the province.

“We are closely monitoring the water streams, known low-lying bridges, communities on the flood lines and areas prone to flooding,” said William Ntladi, DEMS media liaison.

“People residing next to rivers and streams are cautioned to remain on high alert. Even if it doesn’t rain in their areas, rivers may be flooded and have a devastating impact on unsuspecting communities.

“Residents with perimeter walls should also remain vigilant as damming water could lead to structural damage. Weep holes should be created at the base of the walls to allow a free flow of water,” he said.

Motorists are urged to minimise their speed during showers as poor visibility may affect reaction times.

“Road surface traction becomes poor during bouts of rain and pooling water may mask potholes, which could lead to damage to the vehicle’s tyres,” said Ntladi.

“Safety consciousness builds resilient communities and is important to preserve lives. Safety practices remain an individual`s ultimate responsibility.”

In case of an emergency, call the city`s life-threatening emergency call centre on 011 458 0911, 10177 or 112.
