40th Toy Run draws thousands of riders

It is estimated 10 000 bikers arrived to support the occasion.

The thunderous roar of thousands of motorcycles descending on Benoni Northerns Sport Club on November 27 saw bikes of every shape, model and size taking part in the 40th annual Toy Run Gauteng.

With the sun beaming down, it is estimated that about 10 000 bikes, accompanied by fluffy companions, made the trek from various starting points to not only commemorate four decades of the event’s success but also it getting back to normal since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to organiser and chairperson of the Toy Run Trust, Pete Beart, 11 000 toys were loaded on trucks and will now be distributed among various Rotary, Lions and Round Table clubs to donate to children’s homes across the province.

“This was not a record collection, but given the impact that the dreaded pandemic had on drives such as this, we are grateful for every donation and contribution. It will make a difference in the live of children in need,” said Beart.

“As always, it was a privilege to see so many people coming out to support the event and to be able to enjoy the festivities.”

A highveld storm and showers led to the event coming to an early end just before 14:00 and cutting the performances by Backbone and Tryst short.

“Our annual Miss Toy Run pageant had to be abandoned but we look forward to biking beauties competing for the title next year,” Beart said.

“We would like to thank everyone who supported this year’s event and we look forward to doing it all again in 2023.”

Special thanks was extended to CMS Security, members of the Benoni CPF and members of various motorcycle clubs for ensuring rider safety.

“The event could not have been possible without the tireless efforts of our volunteers and sponsors,” said Beart.
