Crumbling, pothole-riddled Madeley Road finally gets attention

Residents have for years been trying to get the municipality to carry out more lasting improvements on Madeley Road

The crumbling stretch of Madeley Road in Hughes is finally getting the attention it deserves.

The metro has assigned contractors to resurface a section of the road.
The Boksburg Advertiser previously published several articles highlighting the deteriorating state of the road between Rietfontein and Pretoria Road.

Contractors are expected to finish construction works by the end of this week.

According to Ward 33 Clr Ashley Hoods, the project will see contractors resurfacing about 384m of the road, and this project is expected to be completed by end of this week.
He pointed out that, owing to budgetary constraints, the department opted to do the resurfacing of the most affected local roads in phases and the following phases are dependent on the availability of funds.

Woods also shared that there are plans to rehabilitate the intersection of Rietfontein and North Rand roads next to Mercedes Benz and the Eastpoint shopping centre.
“We are obviously excited to see the road finally receiving the much-needed attention as we fought hard with the department to prioritise it. We are, however, not out of the woods yet as many more roads require urgent attention,” said Hoods.

Owing to budgetary constraints, the section of the Road towards the East Rand Mall will remain in its current state until enough money is secured for the repair, according to the area’s ward councillor.

Hoods told the Advertiser that they have been trying to get the municipality to carry out more lasting improvements on Madeley Road since 2017.
“In that year, the metro then appointed a service provider to evaluate the road and the outcome of the evaluation was that the road required reconstruction instead of rehabilitation,” explained Woods.
