Project to restore Boksburg CBD gains momentum

The main objective of the initiative is to encourage all relevant stakeholders to take responsibility and unite behind a common mission to improve the aesthetics of the city's economic environment.

The campaign for the restoration of the Boksburg CBD seems to be gathering momentum as more business operators and property owners are showing keen interest to support the initiative.

Following years of neglect, a few local businesses in partnership with local ward councillors have embarked on a project, dubbed City Improvement Initiative, to restore the Boksburg CBD to its former glory.

On September 28, the committee held a meeting to sell the idea and plans of the City Improvement Initiative to the wider business community in the precinct.
According to Ward 32 Clr Marius de Vos, the initiative received overwhelming support from business operators and property owners in the CBD and the industrial areas.

Vandals, crime, illegal dumping, neglect and overcrowding have left the CBD a shadow of itself.

“They have undertaken to actively support the initiative, with others even volunteering themselves to be part of the steering committee for the project to restore the area to its former glory.
“I’m satisfied that the objective of the meeting was achieved and expression of the frustration of business was found in the exchange of ideas on how to breathe new life into the decaying CBD and greater business district of Boksburg.
“Our collective initiative intends to encourage all relevant stakeholders to take responsibility and unite behind a common mission to improve the aesthetics of our economic environment,” said de Vos.

The committee pointed out that the project will further entail restoring law and order to ensure legal and safe economic activities, encouraging property owners to refurbish and maintain their properties and working with authorities to combat vandalism to infrastructure.
Ward 17 councillor Simon Lapping and PR councillor Andrew Harris also attended the meeting held at the Ekurhuleni council’s Boksburg City Chamber.
