World champion boxer shines light on dog fighting

The boxer is against dog fighting and animal cruelty.

Seven times world champion boxer, Hekkie Budler, was recently welcomed for a tour at the Boksburg SPCA to raise awareness about dog fighting.

Budler expressed his concern about the number of cruelty cases the SPCA investigates relating to organised dog fighting.

During his visit, he posed for photos with SPCA staff and animals to help shine a spotlight on this dreadful ‘sport’.
“I’m against animal cruelty and dog fighting. I am also the owner of bull terriers, dogs used in dog fights.

“I want people to be aware of the issue and encourage them to help the society to put a stop to it,” he added.

The boxer explained the highlight of his SPCA visit was seeing the animals and taking pictures with them.

“It was an amazing experience. You can see the people at the SPCA working around the clock to help the animals.

“I also want to urge people to rather adopt a dog from the SPCA than buy one from a breeder. Give the dogs a new lease on life.

“Furthermore, the society is always in need of food and funds. It’s so easy to buy a packet of food or support its charity shop,” said Budler.

Boksburg SPCA manager, Vicky Finnemore, highlighted dog fighting is illegal, but rife in South Africa.
“SPCA inspectors are faced with the daunting task of confiscating pit bulls and other power breeds that have been brutally mauled in dog fights,” said Vicky.

She said the society commends Budler on his choice to speak out against dog fighting.

“Hopefully more South African celebrities will speak out to support our plight.”

Finnemore encouraged community members to report anyone suspected of dog fighting to their local SPCA.
“We rely on tip-offs, as it can be difficult to catch these dog fights in the act,” she highlighted.

The public is welcome to donate R50 now to help society combat cruelty.
