Former ballroom dancer celebrates her centenary

“Life is sweeter when celebrated everyday”

Elegant and the eternal belle of the ball, Petronella Durrheim (neé Mostert) of the Rynpark Retirement Village celebrated her 100th birthday on September 19.

Formally from Boksburg South, Nella, as she is lovingly known, is described as someone that enjoyed every minute of her long and rich life.

Never having children of her own, the auspicious birthday was celebrated with her nieces and nephews, whom she loved to spoil and is still very close to.

“Nella has always been a lady and spent many hours perfecting her paces and swings as a ballroom dancer,” said Valarie van Zyl, niece.

“She worked within office administration but whenever life felt like it became too routine, she would wave her loved one’s farewell and sail off into the sunset on a cruise ship. She travelled the world.”

With so many in attendance at the lavish party held in her honour, it is evident that Petronella’s gentle nature and presence had woven a golden thread amongst her six brothers’ and sisters’ children.

“We are extremely blessed to have had so much precious time with Nella,” said Valarie.

“Family is very important to her and time spent with her is like stepping onto the life elegant butterfly.”

According to her family, Petronella had only two wishes for her 100th birthday, to have a grand celebration shared with her friends and family as well as to have her photo published in the local newspaper.
