Taxi driver dies in Commissioner Street crash

The driver of the bakkie suffered moderate injuries.

A taxi driver, whose name has not been released by the police, died after a head-on collision between his mini-bus taxi and a bakkie in Commissioner Street, between Reiger Park and Angelo yesterday (August 22) afternoon.

The driver of the bakkie suffered moderate injuries.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, Life Healthcare and the provincial EMS arrived on the scene at 15:05 to find the bakkie and taxi in the middle of the road.

“On closer inspection, medics found the male driver of the bakkie walking around the scene while the taxi driver was entrapped in his vehicle.

“Medics assessed the patients and found that the bakkie driver had sustained moderate injuries while the taxi driver was in a critical condition,” explained Meiring.

Rescue services had to use specialised equipment to free the driver from the taxi.

“Once released, medics treated the patients and provided the critically injured man with advanced life support. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of paramedics, the taxi driver subsequently succumbed to his injuries.”

The bakkie driver was transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Reiger Park police were on the scene for further investigations.
