CoE comments on Solomon Road sewage issue

While still unclear when the city will fix the road defects caused by the leaky pipes, the city indicated Solomon Road is part of their ‘priority list’.

Responding to questions about the regular sewage overflows on Solomon Road in Lilianton, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) blamed this environmental crisis on unlawful activities in the area.

These include infrastructure vandalism, theft of manhole covers and illegal dumping, which the metro said cause high volumes of foreign objects to end up in the sewerage system.

The city said it is considering alternative means of safeguarding the manhole covers in Solomon Road as thieves frequently steal them.
While frustrated residents cited shoddy workmanship as the cause of the overflows, the CoE has asserted the cause of these frequent blockages seems to be the manhole cover theft.

It was alleged that certain depots lack the required resources to deal with the problem decisively or rehabilitate the city’s ageing sewerage system.
Boksburg Advertiser asked the CoE when it will substantially invest in sewerage infrastructure to address the problem of overflowing manholes.
Dlamini said the city has access to contractors on an ‘as-and-when required’ basis.

Frustrated Ward 33 Clr Ashley Hoods has called on municipal management to urgently address the recurring problem of sewage spillage in Solomon Road.

Apart from the damaged sewerage system, Solomon Road became almost impassable because of craters created by the leaking underground pipes.
While still unclear when the city will fix the road, the city indicated Solomon Road was part of their ‘priority list’.
