Opposition parties gunning for Ekurhuleni mayor

Mayor Tania Campbell is facing another motion of no confidence.

A motion of no confidence has been tabled against the Ekurhuleni Mayor Tania Campbell.

Campbell will be facing her second vote of no confidence at the Germiston Council Chambers on March 30. It’s still unclear if councilors will vote by way of secret or in an open ballot.

Committed

Despite the motion, which threatens to remove the mayor from her position, Campbell said in a statement issued by her office she remains committed to residents of Ekurhuleni.

“The office of the mayor notes that a motion of no confidence was accepted by the programming committee and will be heard at the ordinary sitting of council scheduled for March30. This office respects the processes of council and the democratic rights of parties represented in council,” said Campbell in in the statement.

“Despite this, we remain steadfast in our commitment to serve all residents of the City of Ekurhuleni. Service delivery remains a priority for our multi-party coalition government, and we will not waiver in continuing to deliver on our mandate.”

Ploy
This comes after the DA lost key council positions: the positions of council speaker and chief whip to the said ANC and EFF ‘partnership’.

DA’s Raymond Dlamini lost in the elections, and DA’s Khetha Shandu resigned prior to the voting.
An insider, who asked not to be named, told the Advertiser that the said ANC–EFF led ‘partnership’ was gunning to remove Campbell, adding that getting rid of the DA in the aforementioned position was part of a ploy to subsequently remove the mayor.

The source explained that it was done to pave the way to amend the standing order, which previously only allowed for no-confidence motions to be tabled at least after six months.

The Ekurhuleni council is made up of 224 seats. The ANC boats 86 seats, DA 65, EFF 31, ActionSA 15, FF+ 8, PA 4, IFP 3, ACDP 2, and the group of smaller parties, dubbed Super Seven, boats 10 seats altogether.
