Illegal dumpsite affects church services

People mostly throw their dirt during weekends at the land.

An illegal dumpsite on the corner of Elsburg Road and Commissioner Street is affecting ZCC church members, especially on Sundays.

According to Daniel Selomo, a ZCC member, the illegally dumped debris blows onto their church premises.

“The problem becomes worse on Sundays, because the recyclers burn the rubbish and the smoke comes to our church premises and affects our Sunday services,” he said.

One of the recyclers in the area, Mojalefa Mokoena, said they were given permission to ply their trade on the land by the municipality.

“We only allow trucks from one company to dump here and when the dumping becomes a lot I sometimes call tractors to come and clean the place.

“We are pleading with the municipality to secure the area so we can use it effectively.

“There are a lot of problems that a fence can solve. Our material for recycling is sometimes stolen and we are always chasing children away who want to play here. If there was a fence these things wouldn’t happen.”

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the Environmental Resources Management department cleaned the land on December 2.

“The claim that this land was leased to recyclers is untrue. However, the installation of fencing will be budgeted for within council’s budget framework and we will continue to monitor the situation,” he said.
