‘Rolex Gang’ may be behind robbery, fatal shooting at restaurant

Only the man's Rolex watch was stolen.

Police are investigating a case of murder and armed robbery after a man was fatally shot in the parking area of the Birchwood Spur in North Rand Road on August 4.

According to Captain Nelda Sekgobela, SAPS Ekurhuleni district spokesperson, the man was robbed of his Rolex watch just after parking at the front of the restaurant at about 12:00.

“After the man stopped, two men jumped out of a Suzuki that had been following him. The men started fighting with the victim and he was shot three times in the lower body,” said Sekgobela.

Paramedics certified the victim dead on the scene, next to his bakkie.

Sekgobela said a Rolex wristwatch with an estimated value of R350 000 was taken from the victim.

They said all role players attended the scene.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Constable Khakhathi Siphoro confirmed no arrests have been made.

According to a well-placed source, the man (55) first did shopping at the pharmacy at The Conservatory @ Lakefield. He then went to Builders Warehouse in North Rand Road whereafter he stopped in the parking area of the Birchwood Spur.

He said the man’s wife was with him.

The source said roadside security footage also suggests another vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux with two occupants, was part of the crime, along with the Suzuki Swift.

According to the source, it is suspected that a so-called Rolex Gang is involved.

The gang is known for targeting individuals wearing Rolex watches and subsequently robbing them.

Siphoro did not confirm the possibility of the involvement of the gang as investigations continue.

Johan Erasmus (franchisee) said on behalf of Birchwood Spur that they are heartbroken by the incident.

“The well-being and safety of our guests is our top priority, and we are extremely grateful that no one else was injured in the shooting. We are providing trauma counselling to all those affected by this horrible incident. We will offer any information that may assist the police to apprehend the culprits,” he said.

Erasmus extended his deepest sympathies to the family.
