Pair found with body parts in suitcase appear in court
Officers found the mutilated body of a man in a suitcase.
The 33-year-old Actonville woman allegedly found last week in possession of a suitcase containing body parts has abandoned her bail application.
Tatenda Mhlanga (33) and her co-accused, Johannes Lebese (53), appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on November 20 and face charges of murder and violating a corpse.
It is alleged that on November 11, while Crime Prevention Wardens were patrolling near Roshini and Kohinor streets, they saw the pair pushing a suitcase that appeared heavy.
According to SAPS Ekurhuleni district communications Officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela, they stopped the pair and asked what was inside the purple suitcase.
“The man said it was a cow’s head, and when the wardens started searching the suitcase, the woman ran away. The wardens found the mutilated body of a man in the suitcase.”
The wardens apparently gave chase but could not catch the woman. They arrested the man.
“When the police arrived at the scene, they found a human head and other body parts. While waiting for a photographer from the SAPS, community members noticed other body parts about 30m from the scene.”
Sekgobela said preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased had been staying with his girlfriend, the 33-year-old female suspect, in Actonville. The male suspect, who lives on the same street as the woman, alleges she asked him to help her carry the bag.
The matter was postponed to November 24 for Lebese’s formal bail application.
