Officers get guns off street

A BFS officer recovered two unlicensed firearms in 11 hours.

Three suspects were arrested in 11 hours on charges of being in possession of unlicensed firearms.

On October 11 at 05:00, off-duty Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officer Sergeant Jaco Powell received information from a local security company, Legendary Guardians, that two suspects were seen jumping the wall of a complex on Odendaal Street, Morganridge.
The suspects jumped back onto the street in an attempt to flee from the security personnel but were apprehended.

These two men were arrested on Odendaal Street in Morganridge after they were seen jumping over a wall. They were found in possession of a .22 pistol and house break-in implements.

“Powell’s shift for the day was only supposed to start at 09:00, but upon hearing that no one from the local police station had responded to the security company’s calls for assistance, he promptly headed to the scene,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the BFS spokesperson.

“Upon his arrival, it was found that the suspects had been tactically subdued, and a search of a heavily laden pillowcase in their possession was conducted. Inside, Powell found housebreaking implements, including a hacksaw, pick head, bolt cutter, and an unlicensed .22 pistol with the serial number filed off.”

The suspects were taken to the Boksburg North Police Station and will appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of housebreaking implements.

On the same day at 16:00, Powell and Constable Juan-Marie Eksteen were conducting routine patrols when they received a call from Crime Intelligence members of a man seen walking with a firearm.

Responding to the information initially shared by members of Blue Hawk Tactical, the duo rushed to the veld on Modderbee Road, where the suspect was last seen.
“Finding the man matching the supplied description, the officers conducted a body search and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm,” said Giblin.

“The Star 9mm short pistol and four live rounds of ammunition tested positive as stolen in Phoenix in 2019. The 27-year-old suspect was arrested and will appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court facing charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”
