Three arrests in connection with vehicle theft

Be aware of your surroundings and be on the lookout for suspicious people.

Boksburg North SAPS warns about an increase in vehicle theft but also reports a breakthrough with three arrests on June 28.

The police arrested the suspects on the corner of Trichardts Road and Railway Street after members of the Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protection and Belgian K9 Security Solutions spotted a red Ford Focus, reported to be involved in the theft of vehicles in Boksburg, on the corner of Ravenswood and Trichardts roads.

The members gave chase and when they intercepted it on Railway Street the driver lost control and crashed into another vehicle.

They called the Boksburg North SAPS for backup, who arrested the three men.

They found jamming devices and car burglary implements in the car.

Boksburg North SAPS station commander Colonel Mack Mngomezulu said they could link the suspects to three vehicle theft cases.

EMPD Bromberg Precinct officers recovered a vehicle stolen in Durban in the Boksburg area in the early hours of June 24.

“Following up information, officers went to Nicholson Street, Sunward Park, where they found a white Ford Ranger matching the description and details of a vehicle reported stolen in Durban. They found it abandoned outside a property,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

They made no arrests, and they took the vehicle to Johannesburg Aeroton Pound for safekeeping.

A source told the Boksburg Advertiser that thieves stole about 17 vehicles in the Boksburg North policing area last week.

Even though Mngomezulu could not share statistics, he confirmed they noted an increase in the theft of motor vehicles.

He said the targeted vehicles include the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner and VW Polos.

“In most cases, the suspects use jamming devices. Owners think their vehicles are locked, but because of this device, it’s not,” said Mngomezulu.

These thefts mostly occurred during the day at malls, shopping centres and residential complexes.
Mngomezulu said the police are upping their efforts in the affected areas, which includes heightened visibility.

Security tips:
• Double-check that your car is locked. Physically try the door handle.
• Be aware of your surroundings and be on the lookout for suspicious people nearby.
• Report suspicious vehicles to mall security or the police.
