R200 000 worth illicit cigarettes confiscated, four men arrested

The men are facing charges of dealing in illegal cigarettes and may also face additional charges for being in the county without documentation.

EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) officers arrested four men and confiscated R200 000 worth of illicit cigarettes at a shop on the corner of Rietfontein Road and Eight Street on May 18.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, the confiscation came after a tip-off from a reliable source regarding suspected undocumented store owners selling illicit cigarettes.

“During a search, EMPD officers discovered twenty-one boxes of illicit cigarettes. They were confiscated and taken to the Boksburg North Police Station for safekeeping.

“The four men found in the shop, were arrested and detained at the Boksburg North police station,” said Thepa.

They are facing charges of dealing in illegal cigarettes and will appear at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon. The men may face additional charges under the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002).
