Two robbers wounded in attempted robbery at East Point

The robbers did not manage to flee with the cellphones.

An armed security guard foiled a robbery at East Point Shopping Centre this morning when a courier delivery carrying cellphones worth R1.2m was targeted.

The security guard reportedly shot and wounded two of the robbers.

According to Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Justice Ramaube, the courier driver and two security guards stopped at a delivery bay at about 09:10 to deliver the cellphones to a store in the shopping centre.

“As they passed a passage leading to the centre from the outside and were at the Dis-Chem entrance, the security guard walking in front saw a man pointing a firearm at them. A second armed robber then appeared behind the guard. They instructed the courier to hand over the trolley with the cellphones, which he did,” he explained.

The scene inside East Point where two robbers were thought to have been wounded by a security guard.

“As the robbers walked off, one of the security guards pulled out his firearm. The robbers aimed their firearms at the guard who fired at them.

“The robbers abandoned the trolley and fled. Apparently, six of them were involved.”

Ramaube said it is suspected that two of the robbers were wounded as they left a trail of blood while making their escape in a Polo TSI and a Bantam bakkie.

Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.
