Check your car doors are locked

Take all the necessary precautions before you leave your car

As the festive season approaches, Boksburg police warn motorists to be very cautious as criminals are using numerous tactics, including car jamming devices, to gain access to vehicles to steal valuables.

According to the Boksburg SAPS Sector Two commander, Constable Nyembe, the hotspots in their precinct are the CBD parking areas in Commissioner, Leeuwpoort and Market streets and shopping centres in Parkdene, Sunward Park and Parkrand.
Nyembe said the police station receives complaints about theft from motor vehicles almost on a daily basis.

She stated that investigations have revealed that in some cases thieves use various signal-jamming devices, including universal remotes and ordinary gate remotes, to block motorists’ central car locking systems. This prevents the car from locking so that they can gain access.

Motorists are urged, especially when they park at shopping centres, to make sure that the doors to their vehicles are properly locked by physically testing the doors.
“Don’t assume that by pressing the remote locking device your car is locked,” Nyembe said.

Motorists are also urged not to leave valuables in their vehicles where they can be easily seen through the window.
Rather lock such items in the boot if you can’t take them with you.

“As part of our proactive patrols during this period, we will have an increased number of officers on the ground working with community patrollers, security companies and other law enforcement agencies.
“We also urge every citizen to assist by becoming our eyes and ears on the ground to provide police with tip-offs, and this can be done anonymously.
“Report suspicious activity and persons loitering in parking lots to the security providers in the area or by calling the Boksburg SAPS customer service centre on 082 575 1740 or 10111.”

As part of the festive season message, the police also warn business operators and the general public of crimes that tend to increase over the festive season.
These include business robberies, particularly in the CBD, common robberies, bank followings, scams and burglaries at premises where people are away on holiday.
