Police van transporting prisoners crashes into stationary vehicle

The damaged police vehicle was towed to the Boksburg Police Station.

A prisoner suffered injuries when a police van he and six other prisoners were travelling in collided with a light motor vehicle in Boksburg yesterday (November 17).

The vehicle was transporting the prisoners from the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court to Boksburg Correctional Services.

Boksburg SAPS station commander Colonel Matshedeso Mbele confirmed the incident, saying the collision took place at the intersection of van Wyk Louw Drive and Barry Marais.

The prisoner sustained slight injuries to the head during the crash, and he was taken to hospital for treatment where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

Another vehicle was then used to transport the other six prisoners to correctional services. Mbele said it appears the police van drove into a stationary vehicle.

“What apparently happened is that the vehicle could not move out of the way of our vehicle, which had its sirens on, due to traffic.”
